How should I prepare for a consultation and what will happen?

If you are considering arranging to receive a visit from one of our Consultants, you might be wondering what such a meeting entails. Read on:

How long will it take?

Depending on the complexity of your estate, a consultation can last between approximately 45 minutes and two hours.

How should I prepare?

In order to get the most from your consultation, give your estate planning requirements some thought prior to your Consultant's visit. This will best enable your Consultant to base the advice they give you on your specific requirements. Here are some important things to bear in mind:

  • What is the value of your estate? This does not need to be an exact figure and an approximate valuation is absolutely fine. A Consultant will not need to see any of your bank statements, but would be unable to give full advice without knowing at least an approximate valuation.
  • Who do you wish to appoint as executors of your Will? Any Will must have at least one executor, although the recommendation is that at least two should be nominated. Who would you nominate?
  • If you have children under the age of 18, who would you wish to look after them if you couldn't? Any child under the age of 18 would become a ward of court if they are orphaned and no provision is made in the Will of their parent as to who their legal guardian should be.
  • How do you wish your estate to be distributed? Who are you planning to leave your estate to and in what shares?

In advance of your consultation you might find it useful to jot down any questions in relation to your Will or general estate planning that you have always wanted an answer to. Has a friend or family member mentioned something that didn't seem right to you? Do you know exactly what would happen if you never made a Will? Anything you have always wanted to know but have not previously had the opportunity to ask can be addressed at your consultation. This is your opportunity to clarify things once and for all.
