Probate Fees have Increased – Why it is Important to Obtain a Grant of Probate
As of 13 July 2026, the Government has increased the fee for applying for a Grant of Probate from £300 to £526 for estates valued over £5,000. The increase reflects the cost of delivering the probate service and means that estates requiring probate will now incur a significantly higher application fee.
A Grant of Probate is the legal document that gives executors the authority to deal with a deceased person's estate. Without it, they may be unable to sell property, close bank accounts, access investments or distribute assets to beneficiaries. Where there is no Will, the equivalent document is known as Letters of Administration.
Although not every estate requires probate, many do. Delaying an application can slow the administration of the estate, postpone distributions to beneficiaries and, now that the application fee has increased, result in higher costs where probate has not already been applied for.
If you have recently lost a loved one and are unsure whether probate is required, seeking legal advice at an early stage can help avoid unnecessary delays and ensure the estate is administered as efficiently as possible.
