Preparing for your Appointment with Casey & Associates
To get the most out of your appointment with us, it is worth giving your Estate Planning requirements some thought beforehand. This way, your consultant will be able to tailor their advice to suit your needs. Here are some things you may wish to consider:
Do you currently have a Will, or have you previously written one?
Any existing Will you may have could provide a useful starting point for establishing what you do and don’t want, as well as letting us check if there is anything that needs updating.
Who do you wish to appoint as executors of your Will?
Any Will must have at least one executor, although our best advice is that at least two executors should be nominated. You can have them act either together or have one main executor and one replacement. They are individuals that you trust to carry out your wishes after you die. Please keep in mind that beneficiaries can also be executors.
Do you have any children under 18? If so, who would you wish to look after them if you were to pass away?
Any child under the age of 18 would become a ward of court if they are orphaned and no provision is made in the Will of their parent as to who their legal guardian should be. Therefore, it would be worth thinking about who may be a suitable guardian/s, and discussing with them to check that they are happy with this arrangement.
Do you have pets that you would like to provide for if you were to pass away before them?
You can make provision for your pets in your Will to ensure that money is left to look after them, and that someone you trust is there to take care of them.
Do you know about your allowance against inheritance tax? Do you have any concerns surrounding this?
Having a think about any assets you own, their value, and any savings accounts or investments you have can enable our advisor to have a discussion with you about inheritance tax. They will not need to see any bank statements, but a rough idea of the valuation of your estate would be beneficial.
Have you heard of Lasting Power of Attorney documents? Have you considered implementing them?
These are documents for use in life, if you are no longer able to make decisions for yourself in your best interests. They enable people you choose and trust to take those decisions on your behalf. There are two types to consider: one for Property and Financial affairs, and the other for Health and Welfare decisions.
You may have further questions than what we’ve covered here, and your consultant would be more than happy to go over these with you during your appointment. Making a list of your questions and/or concerns before your appointment ensures you don’t forget or miss anything, and make the most of your time with us.
