Diary of a surviving family member

hero image

12th August: Today's the dreaded day - Dad's funeral. It was difficult to make funeral arrangements as I wasn't sure what he would have wanted best, if only we had known. I was half-surprised to see my brother David there, looking like he's been doing well. Him and Dad hadn't spoken for over ten years. David and I had drifted apart when they fell out; I wish they "made up" before Dad died. I must remember to have another look for Dad's Will.

27th August: Oh no. One of Dad's neighbours phoned me to say Dad's home has been flooded. I gave the insurers a ring but they said the house wasn't insured as the policy was in Dad's name, so I will have to pay for the repairs myself. All of Dad's accounts have been frozen by the bank and building society. They are both asking to see the Will but I still can't find it! This is so frustrating. I am certain Dad made one because he wanted to leave everything to me, as David had gone out of his life and did not need anything.

20th September: Received a letter today from a firm of solicitors acting for David asking about Dad's finances. John is applying to the court to act as executor. I know Dad would have wanted me to do that, and I am currently paying everything for Dad. I have just paid the funeral directors, everything is costing me thousands! I still can't find Dad's Will, I so wish he had told me where it was.

4th October: Feeling really down at the moment. Another letter came through from David's solicitors, saying I have been meddling in Dad's affairs when I had no lawful right to. I don't understand the letters, they keep going on about intestacy. Why is David doing this to me?

18th November: Things are horrible. I went to the local solicitors today, something else that I'm having to pay for. My overdraft is maxed out and the bank keeps hitting me with extra charges. I might have to become an executor with David, and the solicitor told me that half of everything is most likely to go to him. Dad - please send me a sign. Did you make a Will? Where is it? I can't cope for much longer.

2nd January: David has become a monster. He knows I don't have the funds to pay for expensive solicitors, but is still fighting this and telling the court that I'm not fit to be an executor of my own Dad's estate! I didn't think I was wrong in selling Dad's car - I used the money to pay for his things, like the house repairs after the flood.

10th February: Dad, please help me. I am only going to get half of everything less expenses, whatever that means, and David is in control of everything. Why didn't you tell me where your Will was stored?
