Diary of a loved one...

hero image

20 January: Very sad day. Mum's funeral. I think Mum would have liked the service and arrangements. If only we had known what she really wanted. Everyone was very kind. Really strange to see John after all this time. Has it really been thirty years? We used to be so close when we were young. How can a brother become so distant? He seems to have done well for himself. If only he and Mum had "made up" before she died. Must remember to look once again for Mum's Will.

03 February: Disaster. One of Mum's neighbours phoned me first thing. A branch fell onto Mum's house in the storm and has damaged the roof. I phoned the insurers but the house was not insured because the policy was in Mum's name. I will have to pay for scaffolding and builders myself. The bank and building society have frozen all Mum's accounts. This is just not fair. They are both asking to see the Will. But I still cannot find it. I am sure that Mum made one because she told me she was leaving everything to me, her "special daughter", because John had gone out of her life and did not need anything.

28 February: Got letter from a fancy firm of solicitors acting for John asking about sorting out Mum's finances. It seems that John is applying to the court to do this. So he will act as an executor. I know Mum wanted me to do that. She told me that she put it in her Will. I am paying for everything for Mum. I have had to pay the funeral director now. This is costing me thousands. At least I managed to sell Mum's car to get some cash. I still cannot find Mum's Will. I wish she had told me where it was. All those hours spent drinking tea reminiscing about the past. Just one minute to tell me where her Will was would have done it. WHY DID WE NOT TALK ABOUT IT?

16 March: Lovely spring morning with the birds singing. I wish I felt as joyful as them. Received another letter from John's solicitors. They are saying I have been meddling in Mum's affairs when I had no lawful right to. I don't understand their letters. They keep going on about intestacy. I hate John.

02 May: I have cried all evening. I went to the local solicitors today. Of course I am having to pay them from my own money. My overdraft is at max. My bank keeps hitting me with extra charges. I might have to become an executor with John. And the solicitor told me that it looks like half of everything will go to John. Mum - are you looking down on me? Please send me a sign. Did you make a Will? Where is it? I cannot go on much longer like this.

18 June: John you have become a monster. You know I don't have the funds to pay for expensive solicitors. How dare you tell the court that I am not fit to be an executor of MY Mum's estate? I didn't know it was wrong to sell Mum's car. I used the money to pay for her things. Like the scaffolding. And I got a good deal by paying cash. That's why I never got a receipt.

24 July: Mum ~ help me please. John has control of everything and I am only going to get half of everything less expenses. Whatever that means. Why didn't you write a Will and tell me where it was stored?
